Beginning after the election in late 2016, a group of scholars and librarians began working with a growing community of collaborators to build refuge for federal environmental and climate data. We joined forces with other budding efforts, as well as with people who had been working on safeguarding data and government information for decades. While working to support grassroots efforts to support action at data rescue events, we also gathered a community of librarians, government data producers, civic technology activists, and open data leaders for a meeting in Washington DC on May 8-9 DC and online through a series of web events.
In this session, participants will learn practical lessons about creating web archive collections in responses to urgent needs; building new kinds of collections with new community partners; and data archiving and preservation as sustainable, shared action. Participants will also be invited to share expertise and form new communities for creatively experiment on solutions to sticky problems.

Laurie Allen is the Assistant Director for Digital Scholarship in the Penn Libraries, where she leads a group working to expand the capacity of researchers at Penn to create and share scholarship in new forms. The group engages in digital project development, data management and curation, mapping, experimentations with emerging research methods, and open access publishing. In late 2016, Allen was part of the group that started Data Refuge, and has been involved in bringing together a group of collaborators to form a network of libraries, open data activists and open government efforts at The Libraries + Network is designed to plan for a reinvigorated program like the Federal Depository Library Program aimed at born-digital federal information.
